What to Expect

Laying the foundation

Chiropractic care is like building a house - certain things have to happen in a particular order in order for everything to stand strong and work correctly. When building a house, if you tried to put up your walls before you had a solid foundation, your walls would be weak and eventually collapse. If you tried to put on your roof before the walls were ready, you would run into the same problem. The same is true for your body. Your body has to go through a particular plan of care in order to repair itself correctly and fully. There are three general phases of chiropractic care . . .

Phase 1: Relief Care

If you are in pain when you come into our office, the first objective is to help you feel better. During this phase, progress is usually rapid. The number of treatments you will require during this phase varies and is dependent upon your specific condition. It's hard to say how long it will take until you see relief- it could be as short as a week or up to a month.   Standard treatment plans range from 2-3 times per week for 2-6 weeks.

Phase 2: Rehabilitative Care

Once  your condition has stabilized, you enter the second phase of care, where the objective is to correct any underlying injury, muscle imbalance, postural fault, strengthen the muscles and improve neuro musculoskeletal function.  It is important to remember that may of the conditions for which people seek care have developed over many years; it helps to understand that it takes time to correct these conditions. Once your discomfort has subsided, you may think all is weel and choose to abandon your efforts. However, if you end your care before fully healing the muscle and soft tissues, you can bring on a relapse. Standard treatment plans range 1-2 times a week for 4-12 weeks.

Phase 3: Wellness Care

Once your body has fully healed, it is important to come in for periodic adjustments to avoid problems in the future. You then "Graduate" to the wellness phase, which is designed to maintain your improved health, encourage normal spinal function and to prevent a relapse of the original conditon. Few things as complicated as your body can be fixed and then ignored.  A good way to look at chiropractic is to relate it to dentistry.  You visit your dentist for oral health and check ups, and you should do the same with Dr. Uhl to help maintain spinal health & wellness.

Dr. Uhl will review the three phases of care at your first visit and tailor your treatment plans to your specific condition.
