Why I became a massage therapist:
I became a massage therapist because I wanted to help people heal in a way that is very personal and holistic. It is a health practice that is positive and enjoyable for the majority, which I find is key in helping people develop into their best selves. This not only complements Western medicine in treating existing medical conditions, but it also aids in the prevention of dis-ease in all aspects of the self. Massage therapy and Reiki have allowed me to create a healing space where I can accompany my clients on their journeys of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
My practice philosophy involves considering every aspect of a person’s being to provide effective therapeutic massage. Although it is inarguably important to assess the physical elements that contribute to tension and pain, it is equally vital to consider emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of health. Emotional unrest often accompanies any injury or chronic physical discomfort. By using therapeutic massage techniques, I work with the client to release physical muscle tension, as well as the emotional blockages inhibiting his or her personal growth. Although I utilize primarily Swedish massage, I also incorporate elements of Myofascial Release and Craniosacral Therapy. Both techniques are gentle, and when used in conjunction with Swedish massage, allow the client’s body greater receptivity to healing on a deeper level. I strive to understand the client’s therapeutic needs, while incorporating my own intuitive judgment, in order to create a treatment plan utilizing my techniques to address the client’s concerns. I hope to empower my clients with the knowledge and strategies necessary to implement self-healing techniques that complement the massages they receive.
In addition to practicing massage, I am also a Reiki practitioner, and in the process of becoming a Certified Aromatherapist.
Frequently Asked Questions
What will my first massage therapy appointment be like?
You will be greeted by the receptionist or the massage therapist, and asked to fill out an intake form. After that, your therapist will bring you to the treatment room to talk about your health history and what your expectations are for the massage. After any questions are answered, your therapist will leave the room and allow you to undress to your level of comfort and get on the table underneath the sheets. Your therapist will enter the room (after knocking to make sure you are ready) and make sure you are comfortable. She will check to make sure the face cradle is the correct height, and you will be offered a pillow for underneath your legs. Then, we will begin the massage. If, at any point, we need to adjust anything for your comfort, do not be afraid to speak up (even if it’s more than once!). It is important to be able to ask for what you need to be comfortable. When the massage is completed, your therapist will leave the room to allow you to dress and gather your items. Afterwards, your therapist will meet you at the front desk, check in to see how you feel, if anything changed, and answer any questions about what may have come up during the session. Stretches, protocol for ice/heat, and other techniques for pain relief may be offered for you to do at home until your next session. The receptionist or your therapist will accept your payment and schedule your next session.
What areas of the body are worked on during a full body massage?
A typical full-body session will include work on your back, arms, legs, feet, hands, head, neck, and shoulders. Massages for specific concerns (for example, a whiplash injury) will be structured around treating the affected musculature. You can discuss any concerns with the practitioner during the intake process.
Do I have to remove my clothes?
You are welcome to undress to your level of comfort. There are some massage techniques that may only be done directly on the skin. There are others that can be done over clothing. You and your massage therapist can discuss the best option for your comfort and treatment objective. The client is always discretely draped using a sheet or a sheet and a blanket. Your therapist will only undrape the area of the body they are working on. When the therapist is finished working on an area, the area will be re-draped before another area is undraped for treatment.
It is advised that any jewelry be removed prior to the session, especially necklaces and bulky earrings. It is also recommended that individuals with long hair pull it up into a ponytail or bun. Both of these suggestions are to ensure your comfort during the session.
Do I have the option of having no blankets or sheets?
Clients must be draped at all times. Your therapist will only undrape the area they are working on. If you are too warm, the therapist will take the top blanket off and leave the sheet on for draping.
Is there music?
The music that is usually played is relaxation music, including native flute, jazz, and that used for meditation. However, if there is any type of music you would prefer to listen to, please express this to your massage therapist. We will do our best to honor that request.
What if I get hot or cold?
There are several options for heat or, if you run hot, to make you feel cooler. We have a table warmer, extra blankets, a space heater, and hydrocollator packs for extra warmth. Ice, air conditioning, a fan, and the option of taking off the top blanket are utilized if you are too warm.
Why does my stomach always growl during my massage?
Your body’s parasympathetic nervous system is stimulated during a massage. When that happens, the body slips into “rest and digest“ mode. Literally, your stomach is digesting food at an increased rate. Stomach growling is a compliment to the therapist. It lets us know you are relaxed. No need to be embarrassed, it happens with most people.
I have not had a massage in a long time, because last time the work was too deep and painful. Is this a standard experience for a massage session? Is there any benefit to just “taking the pain”?
One of the most essential elements of a successful massage session is communication between the massage therapist and client. This is especially important with medical massage, as the client is already presenting with a painful condition that is being addressed through massage therapy. Some slight discomfort (similar to a good stretch) is normal during the session, as is some soreness is normal up to a few days afterwards. However, it is essential that if during the session, the pain level exceeds what the client can comfortably tolerate, that he/she communicate that with the therapist. The therapist will check in periodically to ensure client comfort, but ultimately it is the responsibility of the client to express any concerns or need for adjustments. Certain areas of pain sensitivity provide the therapist with essential information about the soft tissue. The massage therapist cannot feel the sensations you are feeling, so it is important that the client communicates that so that the therapist can make accurate assessments and direct treatment in the appropriate direction.
Techniques can always be modified, or an alternate technique can be used to address the same problem in a different way. The healing journey is accomplished through teamwork; both the therapist and the client have to be working together and establish a trusting relationship in order to achieve the best results.
What if I am allergic to certain oils and/or lotions?
I usually use grape seed oil for massages, but I do have other products available upon request. Ingredients are listed on the bottles so I am happy to check those for clients concerned about certain ones.
Why are there so many questions about my health on the intake form?
On the intake form, we ask questions pertaining to the health history of the client. Massage therapy, especially medical massage, requires an in-depth look into the client’s health history. It is important that your massage therapist has a complete overview of all pathologies, injuries, medications, allergies, etc. before starting treatment for your safety, and the safety of the practitioner. There are certain pathologies that may require us to modify the massage, to use or avoid certain massage modalities, or to not provide massage to the client.
Please fill out the form completely. If there is anything that you have questions about, please feel free to ask. Please make sure to include a complete list of medications, including prescription and non-prescription. Medications affect the body and can cause side effects that we need to know about to ensure a safe massage.
How often should I get massages?
This is a question that we are often asked, especially after a client’s first appointment. There are many factors that come into play with this question. The answer lies in what type of results the client is looking for, and/or the severity of the injury/pathology they are presenting with. We see some clients two times a week, and others once every six weeks. The clients that come two times a week tend to be those with specific injuries (such as whiplash from a car accident). These clients tend to come more frequently until they are starting to feel better and we can increase the time between sessions with little or no pain in between. The goal is to get the client on a maintenance schedule as opposed to a treatment schedule. The clients that come every six weeks are on a maintenance schedule, and tend to be in good overall health. They are seeking to maintain their balanced physical condition, and enhance their emotional and mental health. Massage is part of their wellness routine.
I am not sure if I want a massage because I am embarrassed about my body.
We are professional massage therapists and we work on all different types of bodies; men and women, young and old, petite and plus. We hold a space of non-judgment when providing massage. Our focus is on providing the best care possible for you, and how we can go about accomplishing that goal. May I talk during the massage?
The number one priority during a massage therapy session is the client’s comfort. Sometimes, conversations happen. Other times, sleep happens. We pride ourselves in the ability to read people and sense what they need in that moment. To receive optimal benefits from the work, we suggest quieting the mind and keeping conversation to a minimum so you can tune into your body. However, if you need to give feedback about your comfort, do not hesitate to do so.
Making Your Appointment
How long of a session should I come for?
We offer 30 minute, 60 minute, and 90 minute sessions. If you have a specific area to be treated, 30 minutes may be suitable. A 60 minute massage gives me enough time to complete a full body massage. 90 minutes is enough time to complete a full body massage with additional work on a specific area.
How do I schedule an appointment?
Please call 518-783-3031 to schedule your first appointment. Our office staff will do their best to accommodate your day/time request. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to ask. Please inform the office staff in advance if you will be using No Fault insurance.
Do you take walk-ins?
Massages are by appointment only.
What type of payment do you accept?
Cash, Check, American Express, Discover, MasterCard, and Visa.
What if I need to cancel?
24 hours notice is needed to cancel an appointment without being charged for the scheduled time. If you are late for your appointment, you will be given the remainder of the session time and will be charged the full hourly fee. There is no charge for cancelling an appointment within 24 hours. However, the therapist reserves the right to terminate therapy after multiple cancellations at her discretion, if she feels that the client is not invested in his/her treatment.
Should I tip?
Tips are always accepted and appreciated. We understand that massage is an expense, and we want you to be able to come as often as you can. It is at your discretion how much or whether you tip. Be assured, it will not affect the service you receive.
What is medical massage?
Medical massage is a unique form of holistic therapy. Its objective is to address specific problems that other healthcare professionals have diagnosed. The practice of medical massage can be utilized in the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, as well as the long-term management of chronic conditions, with the intention of reducing pain and improving quality of life. What makes medical massage unique is treatment according to a specific objective. The therapist and client identify the specific health issue for which the client is being referred, and set a goal for treatment with this issue in mind.
Do you accept insurance?
We accept insurance through No Fault if you were injured in a car accident. Unfortunately, at this time, regular health insurance does not cover massage therapy. However, if you have a Flexible Spending Account (FSA), you may be able to use it to cover massage therapy. Please contact your insurance provider and/or FSA customer service for more information.
Can I show up to an appointment under the influence of legal or non-legal drugs?
According to New York State law, a massage therapist should not treat a patient or client:
“When the therapist or patient/client is in an altered state of cognitive awareness from the use of prescription, and/or over-the-counter medications, alcohol, or other substances, and the patient/client cannot give informed consent and/or the therapist cannot provide appropriate treatment. Consent for the patient/client may be given by guardians and other caregivers when authorized to do so.”
In summary, if you are under the influence of any legal or illegal substance that hinders your ability to communicate whether or not you are in pain, you cannot receive massage therapy.
Do I need a doctor’s note?
There are certain medical conditions for which a doctor’s note of clearance for massage therapy is required. Many of these conditions are cardiovascular or musculoskeletal in nature. It is strongly advised that you get a doctor’s note of approval for massage before your first appointment. Please make sure to fill out a detailed health history form so that your massage therapist may discuss any contraindicated conditions with you.
What will my first Reiki session be like?
You will be greeted by the receptionist or the Reiki practitioner, and asked to fill out an intake form. After that, the practitioner will bring you to the treatment room to talk about your health history and what your expectations are for the Reiki session. After any questions are answered, the practitioner will leave the room and allow you to get comfortable on the table underneath the sheets and the blankets. You will remain fully clothed for the Reiki session. Getting underneath the sheets and blankets is for your comfort and warmth during the session. Some find being underneath the weight of a blanket is helpful for grounding their energy and relaxing. Because you will be fully clothed, you have the option of taking off the blanket and/or top sheet if you get too warm. After knocking to make sure you are ready, the practitioner will enter the room. She will make sure that you are comfortable on the table. Pillows, extra blankets, a space heater, and a fan will be available for use. We will then begin the Reiki session. The practitioner's hands are placed on or above the body during the session to promote balance and well-being. If, at any point, we need to adjust anything for your comfort, do not be afraid to speak up (even if it’s more than once!). It is important to be able to ask for what you need to be comfortable. When the session is completed, the practitioner will leave the room to allow you to dress and gather your items. Afterwards, your therapist will meet you at the front desk, check in to see how you feel, if anything changed, and answer any questions about what may have come up during the session. Grounding exercises, visualization techniques, etc. may be offered for you to do at home until your next session. The receptionist or your therapist will accept your payment and schedule your next session.
